Challenges of Dental Care for the Pregnant Patient



As a dentist, you will need to be able to treat pregnant patients confidently. As their dental care professional, it is important to be up to date with current thinking and guidance.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Outline the stages of pregnancy
- Describe the challenges a pregnant patient poses to dental care provision
- Explain how to manage the dental care of a pregnant patient
- List which of the drugs used in dental care can be prescribed safely to the pregnant patient
As a dentist, you will need to be able to confidently treat pregnant patients.
This can be an anxious time, with many different ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ for these women.

Before commencing this session you should:
- Have experience of obtaining a comprehensive medical and drug history from a patient
- Have met and talked with a pregnant patient/friend/family member
After qualifying as a dentist in 2002, Lucy achieved her MFDS in 2005 and MBBS in 2009. Lucy is currently working as a foundation year one doctor and has an interest in teaching and medical education. Lucy is working as a content author of the e-DEN project.
