This session will outline the main complications relating to dental local anaesthesia, the possible causes, and the techniques used to overcome these.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • identify the main complications which may arise with the use of local anaesthetics
  • describe the causes of these complications
  • discuss management of complications

Complications arising due to the use of local anaesthesia in dentistry are rare. They can arise for many reasons including poor technique, physical damage by the needle, or due to the anaesthetic solution itself.

  • pharmacology of the local anaesthetic agents
  • maxillary and mandibular local anaesthetic techniques

Andrew Carr (BDS, MFDS, RCSEd) qualified from Newcastle University in 2008 and, after having completed General Professional Training, he is currently a Specialist Registrar in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology at Newcastle Dental Hospital.

Andrew’s interests are in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, Oral Medicine and Dental Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

Dr Kathy Wilson is an Associate Specialist in Dental Sedation at Newcastle Dental Hospital.

Currently lecturing in the field of dental sedation and special care dentistry at undergraduate and postgraduate level, Kathy has extensive clinical experience in management of the anxious dental patient.

Kathy is also part of the Module Editorial Team at e-Den, and is Module Editor for Module 3 Anxiety and Pain Control in Dentistry.
