This session describes the basic clinicopathological features of cysts that present within soft tissues of the oral cavity.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the basic clinical presentation of soft tissue cysts
  • Recognise the basic histological features of common oral soft tissue cysts
  • List the differential diagnoses of soft tissue cysts
  • Describe the basic management of soft tissue cysts

A range of cysts occur within the mouth - some of these are common and may be seen on a fairly regular basis (e.g. mucous extravasation cysts), whereas others are rare but have typical clinicopathological presentations.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:

  • Embryology and anatomy of oral tissues
  • Commonly used histological terms
  • Normal radiographic anatomy

Adam Jones,
Consultant/Honorary Senior Lecturer in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board

Adam qualified at Cardiff Dental School in 2001 and undertook vocational training at Swansea. Following this he gained SHO experience in Periodontology, Oral Medicine, as well as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Subsequently, Adam was appointed as a Specialist Registrar/Honorary Lecturer in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the Sheffield NHS Teaching Trust/University of Sheffield. During this time, he completed his PhD on ’The role of ADAM – integrin interactions on epithelial cell behaviour’ and gained his FRCPath from the Royal College of Pathologists. Adam is now a Consultant/Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
