This session provides an overview of normal bone followed by a range of bone diseases including genetic, metabolic, endocrine and inflammatory bone disorders. For each bone disorder the aetiopathogenesis, clinical presentation, radiological and histological appearances are discussed including patient management, particularly in relation to dentistry.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • List examples of the histology and types of normal bone
  • Explain the cellular functions within normal bone
  • Identify the common disorders of bone, including their clinical presentation, radiological and histological appearances
  • Explain the management of these conditions and the impact that these conditions may have upon the provision of dental care

The structural composition of bone is that of calcium and phosphate salts embedded within a mucoprotein matrix containing collagen fibres.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:

  • The structure and function of bone with a brief understanding of some common bone disorders

Oral and Maxillofacial pathology SpR

Hannah completed her undergraduate training at Sheffield Dental Hospital in 2007. This was then followed by a vocational training year in a general dental practice setting, and then a further year as an associate dental practitioner in Lincolnshire.

Hannah then spent 18 months as a maxillofacial SHO in Northamptonshire and Mid Essex, and 18 months as a split oral medicine, dental radiology and oral pathology SHO in Sheffield and Guys Dental Hospital.

Hannah currently works in St James’s Hospital, Leeds, as an Oral and Maxillofacial pathology SpR.
