Financial Costs and Pressures course for Management and Administration

This session examines how resources are managed within financial constraints. It introduces basic financial accounting terms and principles essential for planning and managing services. The session supports the development of leadership in clinical settings.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Examine the budget-setting process
- Define service costs using basic accounting terms, and examine the implications of changes to services in these terms
- Examine how health services are costed and how changes in service can impact on costs and budgets
- Identify reporting arrangements and protocols for managing financial and other resources which are a cost to the health service
- Explore the impact of financial pressures on the health service
- Identify where the clinician can contribute to using finances and resources efficiently
Before commencing this session you should complete these sessions in the Introductory Module:
- Introduction to Leadership and LeAD
- Introduction to Medical/Clinical Leadership Competency Framework
After qualifying from Imperial College School of Medicine, Sapna completed her junior doctor training, and then gained her training number in nephrology. She is currently doing research in the field of genetics and autoimmune disease. She was invited to join the committee on ’Enhancing engagement in medical leadership’ in 2007 and has had an active interest in developing leadership skills in the postgraduate setting.
Sapna has now completed her research and training and most recently was working part time as a locum consultant with a specialist interest in Vasculitis at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Currently she is on maternity leave after which she hopes to get a substantive post and to continue to pursue her interests in education and research.
