This session describes the pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of pain in inflammatory arthritis.

Objectives

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Explain the clinical features of inflammatory arthritis
  • Describe a patient centred approach to pain assessment 
  • Identify key pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for managing pain in inflammatory arthritis

Common symptoms include painful and stiff joints, and loss of function. Consequently, patients require information and support to manage their pain and optimise their physical, psychological and social function

Zoe Paskins,
Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist

Zoe is an Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist at the Haywood Rheumatology Centre and Clinical Lead for the osteoporosis service for North Staffordshire. She chairs the Midlands Bone Interest Group and sits on various committees within the Royal Osteoporosis Society, including the research grants and conference committees.

Zoe is also a Senior Lecturer at the Primary Care Centre Versus Arthritis at Keele University, where she leads the osteoporosis research group and is currently involved in a range of research studies with qualitative and quantitative methods, with specific research interests in primary care management of osteoporosis and communication in the consultation.

Subhra Raghuvanshi,
Consultant Rheumatologist

Subhra is a newly appointed consultant rheumatologist at Haywood hospital, Stoke on Trent. She has completed West Midlands Specialty Registrar Training Programme and early years training in Midlands. Subhra’s special interests include connective tissue diseases and spondyloarthropathy. She has completed an NIHR funded clinical fellowship in vasculitis at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham. She has a strong interest in medical education and clinical research

Louise Warburton,
General Practitioner and GP with special interest in Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Medicine

Louise has been a GP for over 30 years and is a GPwSI in Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Medicine for NHS Telford and Wrekin and Medical Lead for Telford MKS service. She is an Associate Medical Director for Shropshire Community NHS Trust and is involved in research at Keele University and is one of their GP champions working in Primary Care MSK research and dissemination. She is past President of the Primary Care Rheumatology Society and was until recently a trustee of the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance (ARMA). She is a member of the British Society for Rheumatology Education and Training Committee and was the Medical Editor of Hands On for Arthritis Research UK (ARUK) for a number of years.

Louise has written for GP publications and the RCGP and was one of the Guidelines Development  Group who prepared the NICE Guidelines for the Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis in Adults, which was released in 2009 and updated in 2018, and was involved in the Guidelines for Spondyloarthropathy. She is a content author for the e-GP and e-Pain projects.

Sarah Ryan,
Professor of Rheumatology Nursing

Sarah Ryan is a Professor of Rheumatology Nursing and works for the Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust in Stoke on Trent. Her post is partly funded by the Haywood Foundation, a local arthritis charity. Sarah’s clinical role involves working with patients to manage pain and the associated symptoms of low mood and fatigue. Sarah is course director of an MSc in Clinical Rheumatology Practice at Keele University. Sarah is editor of the journal Musculoskeletal Care.
