This module will provide you with an overview of the basic principles of advanced trauma life support (ATLS). The systematic ABCDE approach in the management of the trauma patient, the primary and secondary survey and the Glasgow coma scale (GCS) score will be explained.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • describe the basic principles of ATLS
  • assess a multiple injured patient using the ABCDE principle
  • differentiate between a primary and secondary survey
  • calculate a patient’s GCS score

Before commencing this session you should have a:

  • knowledge of basic life support

Francine Mariko Ryba,
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

Francine graduated from dentristry in 2002 from GKT. She then worked at GKT as a Dental House Officer for a year and went on to complete vocational training in London. Following this, Francine worked as an SHO in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for 2 years at Barts and the London and at King’s College Hospital. Having found a passion for Maxillofacial Surgery she went on to study medicine at Barts and the London and graduated in 2009.

Francine is currently doing Core Surgical training in London and is based at St George’s Hospital, Tooting.
