ADHD course for GPs
The session helps you to understand Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It covers the epidemiology, aetiology, core symptoms, associated conditions, differential diagnosis and management of the disorder.
This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in June 2021.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- identify the main symptoms of ADHD
- recognise children at possible risk of ADHD and determine when to make a referral
- describe how to manage ADHD in children
- identify comorbid conditions and other problems commonly associated with ADHD
- describe the role of the GP in supporting and managing a child and family with ADHD
Young children are naturally active, impulsive and excitable. They may fidget, interrupt constantly when you are on the phone or explode into a screaming rage when they cannot have their immediate needs gratified. At other times they may act as if in a daydream, failing to pay attention or finish what they start. However, as children grow, in addition to learning social rules, they also develop the capacity to sit still, pay attention and wait their turn.
