Business Management course for GPs
This session examines how plans for services are made within an organisation. It introduces the business case as a valuable tool which contributes to the business planning process, and examines how decisions are made locally about which plans to support. This session supports leadership development in clinical settings.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe how local plans made are influenced by national plans
- Define the forces that influence the development of a successful business plan
- Identify the structure and format of business plans
- Identify contingencies where plans are not successful or only partially supported
- Demonstrate your contribution towards leadership in a clinical setting by producing a brief business plan
As part of improving services for patients, and to promote clinically effective, personal and safe care, there is an onus on all professionals involved in healthcare to ensure that public resources and funding are used efficiently and appropriately. Business plans are important tools in helping to achieve and fulfill this responsibility.

Stephen currently works as clinical advisor to the President of the Royal College of Physicians. He has been seconded to both the Royal College of Physicians and the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, from Brighton and Sussex Universities Hospital trust, as part of the Chief Medical Officer’s Clinical Advisors scheme. His work in this role has covered a number of different topic areas including professionalism, handover, quality in healthcare and medical engagement in leadership and management.
Stephen was an undergraduate trainee at Downing College, University of Cambridge and then KCL School of Medicine, graduating in 2006. Since graduation he has completed an academic Foundation programme in Infectious Diseases and is currently a core medical trainee. On completion of this stage of his training he hopes to pursue specialist training in gastroenterology.
Outside of work Stephen enjoys a keen interest in digital photography and films.
