Personality Disorder course for Allied Health
This session focuses on the controversial diagnosis of personality disorder and lived experiences of the diagnosis. The session will explore what 'personality disorder' means and some of the common misconceptions. During this session you will find out how to deliver safe, compassionate care and treatment in the emergency setting.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Understand what is meant by 'personality disorder'
- Identify some of the myths around personality disorder
- Appreciate what is it like to live with a personality disorder diagnosis
- Describe how your responses and reactions to someone with personality disorder diagnosis can impact on them
- Recognise the emotional impact of working people who are distressed on the clinical team
Kate is a nurse consultant in the Sunderland Psychiatric Liaison Team and is one or the nursing representatives of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Faculty for Liaison Psychiatry.
Kate has worked as a mental health professional into emergency departments for in excess of 10 years. Her interests are in developing truly integrated services, ensuring parity of esteem for mental and physical health and challenging stigma to improve the experience of people with mental health problems.
Oliver Dale is the Clinical Lead for the Personality Disorder Pathway at West London Mental Health Trust. His responsibilities here include the Cassel Hospital and the Personality Disorder Managed Clinical Network. The latter is a dedicated training and consultation service which is co-produced with Emergence. He is a member of the committee for the British and Irish Group for the Study of Personality Disorder (BIGSPD). He also chairs the Personality Disorder Review Group which conducted the 2015 National Personality Disorder Service Survey.
His particular interests include the development of services using a multi-disciplinary and multi-modal approach with co-production as a central tenet. His research interests include the physical health outcomes of personality disorder, the use of medication in personality disorder and the provision of services for those with personality disorder.
