This session is the third in a series of sessions about travel advice for patients and provides a broad overview of the issues GPs must consider when advising and assessing patients who are returning travellers.

This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in October 2020.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Appropriately assess and investigate travellers returning from abroad with illness
  • Distinguish between the most commonly occurring causes of fever, gastro-intestinal disorders and rashes in returning travellers
  • Identify long term health issues related to travel

The most common reasons for returning travellers to attend their general practitioner (GP) are gastro-intestinal problems, fever or rashes.
