Profile Summary
Southern Primary Health, trading as the Southern NSW Medicare Local, is a primary health care organisation working with the region's general practitioners and allied health professionals to keep people well and out of hospital. We play a critical role in the planning and delivery of the region's primary health care services, using local clinicians and communities to help us identify gaps and find the best solutions.

The hospital (acute) sector is managed locally - in our region by the Southern NSW Local Health District - and now the primary health sector has an equivalent organisation to better organise and coordinate health care. There are 61 Medicare Locals nationwide funded by the Federal Government and each has a critical role in the planning, coordination and integration of existing and future health services.

We are here to support health care professionals to provide quality, coordinated care for their patients and to make it easier for people to navigate the health care system. We genuinely understand the health needs of our communities, placing emphasis on identifying local health gaps and developing strategies to address them. We also provide clinical services direct to the community including mental health, Aboriginal health, fitness and lifestyle programs, dietetics, youth health, foot care.

Our History
SNSWML commenced operations on 1 July 2012, transforming from the Southern General Practice Network, a Federally-funded, not for profit organisation that supported GPs and their practice staff by assisting with recruitment, training and practice management. In addition, SGPN undertook a wide range of activities aimed at encouraging GPs to work together and link with other health professionals and the community to improve the quality of health care at the local level.

SGPN also employed allied health professionals to run a range of successful clinical programs through general practices including chronic disease management, youth health, mental health, Aboriginal health, and lifestyle modification programs. Support was provided to a network of more than 200 general practitioners, 120 practice nurses and over 160 practice staff working in 58 practices throughout the south-east of New South Wales.

The organisation was incorporated on 24 October 1994 as the SE NSW Division of General Practice, changing its name to SGPN in December 2007.

In November 2011 as part of its national health reform agenda, the Federal Government announced that SGPN would become the Southern New South Wales Medicare Local following a nationwide competitive tendering process.
