Purpose and Mission

Medical practice managers usually work closely with the doctors of a medical practice or group to develop business strategies, analyze and plan budgets, and set up systems to facilitate daily operations. These experienced professionals are responsible for making sure the practice is running smoothly at all times, while also working to expand the business whenever possible.

Depending on the size of the group, practise managers may supervise dozens or even hundreds of employees, and he or she is typically expected to participate in the decision-making process for hiring senior staff.

Reports To

A practice manager will typically report to a president or CEO of a group. The practice manager may also report directly to the management board of the organization.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Medical practise managers have wide range of supervisory responsibilities. While most operational responsibilities are delegated at larger hospitals and clinics, a modern facilities manager still has numerous responsibilities relating to budgets, staffing, code compliance, emergency planning and planning for expansion or other growth.

Qualifications

The specific qualifications of a practice manager vary a good bit based on the position and group, but a bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of management experience is usually required. Some practices may require one or more professional certifications and/or a master’s degree or equivalent.

Note that most medical practice managers are active members of the Australian Association of Practice Management.

Responsibilities of a Medical Practice Manager

The duties of a practice manager are variable, but typically include at least:

  • recruiting, hiring, training and supervising various types of medical professionals
  • handling accounts and budgets, paying wages and planning to help the practice meet its financial targets
  • creating fair and impartial duty schedules for doctors and other professional staff
  • developing and managing the reception and appointments system of the practise
  • creating and managing manual and electronic patient medical records systems
  • reviewing and ordering appropriate stocks of equipment, stationery and drugs
  • making arrangements for the cleaning, maintenance and security of offices and clinics
  • planning for and attending group board meetings
  • all aspects of regulatory compliance
  • quality assurance in general, and monitoring of prescriptions in specific.

A medical practice manager will also work closely with a number of external organisations such as clinical commissioning groups, other practices, hospitals or clinics, patient groups as well as local social services departments.
