Upcoming “Transfer Of Care” Protocol Leaves Tasmania Health Workers Divided The upcoming “Transfer of Care” protocol in Tasmania’s major hospitals can hasten paramedics' return to duty, but hospital staff fear its repercussions for the state’s healthcare situation. In what the Liberal government once dubbed the “ramping ban,” this new “Transfer of Care” Protocol mandates that paramedics transfer their patients to hospitals within an hour of arrival. Paramedics are to remind the appropriate hospital staff if 30 minutes already elapsed, and higher-level management will be brought in if transfers aren’t accommodated after the full timeframe. This allows paramedics to get back on the road much faster, as less time spent in the hospital means more time spent responding to community calls. While paramedics believe this policy can help them attend to more patients, hospital staff believe it may stretch already limited manpower in healthcare facilities. Whereas a paramedic would at least be attending to a patient in the waiting room, the policy could mean no one would accompany the patient once the one-hour timer is up. Hospitals also argued that the main reason for patients not being accommodated immediately has yet to be addressed: bed blocks. This pertains to hospitals not having enough beds for incoming patients. The Health and Community Services Union, which helped develop the policy, said the government agreed to the protocol more than a year ago. According to them, this means hospitals should have had plenty of time to prepare for its enactment.

States Support Vape Bans In A Bid To Avoid Raising “A New Generation Of Nicotine Users” Various Aussie health ministers support the federal government’s vaping ban proposal, per a joint statement on their concerns towards vapes being used to create a “new generation of nicotine users.” The statement is a response to the government’s recent proposal in parliament to prohibit the import, manufacture, and sale of vapes except in pharmacies. While the government aims to have the laws passed by July 1, the joint statement is calling for parliament to pass the bill much sooner as they “won’t stand by and let our kids get hooked on nicotine.” According to the joint statement, if vapes are therapeutic goods used to help deal with nicotine addiction, then it is appropriate to regulate them the same way other therapeutic goods are managed. However, members of the parliament also shared different views on the proposal. For instance, the Greens asked whether vape users should get a prescription first before accessing vapes. Others expressed concerns that the regulations may be too restrictive for those using vape to quit smoking. Some said that since vapes are targeting younger audiences, they need a new approach to their regulation. The existing proposal aims to prohibit cheap and disposal nicotine vapes as well as “non-therapeutic” variants from entering and being manufactured in Australia. This would also restrict vape selling, as they would be made available only through a prescription with limited flavours. This system would put vape regulations similar to laws applied to alcohol and cigarettes.
