GP at Home: Meet Dr Natalie Caristo (MBBS, BSc, FRACGP), a GP working with 13SICK National Home Doctor Service

Published By 13SICK - National Home Doctor , 5 years ago

I became curious about after hours just after gaining my fellowship. Many of my colleagues had reservations about being in people’s homes with limited resources. But being someone who likes to explore the edges, I decided to do it anyway because I wanted to try it and it helped provide additional income.

I quickly realised that much of what I had heard was based on perceptions and assumptions. I enjoyed it immediately for its variety seeing many category 4 and 5 type patients and I found myself really enjoying seeing patients in their homes and being part of the community. I was delighted by the gratitude expressed by patients and their families and I even remember being offered a 3-course meal during one of my home visits!

Working in a day practice while also being a GP in the home has contributed to my holistic understanding of the patient community. I think it has helped me develop empathy for patients who utilise this service.

As a mum of two young children, I am even more aware of the situation of many families utilising this service. There’s a rational part of your brain where you have medical knowledge and are a doctor, and then there is just you being a mum or dad who is really worried about something.

The after hours work also provides excellent flexibility for parents and mothers looking to return to work after maternity leave. It gives mothers the flexibility to return to work earlier if they wish by choosing shifts that suit their family.

I have also enjoyed the opportunity to develop my leadership skills while working with 13SICK National Home Doctor Service. I am now a Medical Director with the service and utilise my skills to coach and mentor doctors through clinical note reviews, facilitating monthly mentor meetings, developing and presenting CPD, leading an online community of practice and supporting GP Registrars with KFP and OSCE exam preparation.

Working in the after hours offers a wonderful mix of variety, autonomy, flexibility and a deep and rewarding sense of contribution to the community.
