An additional education division has been established by the RACGP Board following the announcement that the college officially assumed accountability for the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program.
Dr. Zena Burgess, Chief Executive Officer RACGP said the Board is firm on the idea that a separate organisational portfolio within the RACGP will be created to handle the delivery of training.
Dr. Burgess described the AGPT program responsibility as a ‘historic moment’ for GP and the RACGP.
She said it mirrors the RACGP’s expertise and professionalism.
The Department of Health will see the RACGP choose candidates and manage the delivery of the AGPT program and the Remote Vocational Training Scheme (RVTS).
It is an important time for the RACGP and they are excited to play a progressively significant part in moulding the future of Australian general practice, Dr. Burgess said.
Having the profession choose aspirants into the AGPT program based on new evidence-based criteria to assure that only the most skilled registrar aspirants are allowed to enter general practice training.
This will make sure that Australian patients get the best quality healthcare service when they visit a GP.
