Introduction to the Medical/Clinical Leadership Competency Framework course for Nurses
This session provides an overview of the Medical/Clinical Leadership Competency Framework (MLCF/CLCF). It explains how it has been constructed and how it can be used.

Introduction to Leadership and LeAD
Lisa Hughes is Allied Health Professions Officer at the Department of Health. She uses her clinical, academic, policy, project and stakeholder management skills to manage a varied portfolio. This includes workforce planning, education and training, leadership and the quality agenda. She is also the Department of Health appointed Co-Chair of the National Allied Health Professional Advisory Board.
Prior to taking on this role, Lisa demonstrated strong innovation and leadership in her role as Director of the Department of Health funded Creating an Interprofessional Workforce Programme. As part of the programme Lisa wrote the Department of Health’s framework for interprofessional education and training for health and social care in England.
Lisa’s other previous roles include a dual role at the University of Surrey where she prepared undergraduate dietitians for clinical practice. She also managed the South East Region Dietietic Placement Project, which successfully increased dietetic placement capacity by 458%.
Lisa qualified as a dietitian in 1992 and went onto specialise in both eating disorders and diabetes. Lisa has also worked internationally and been on the board of a UK charity. Lisa has excelled in service improvement, evidence-based policy and mulitprofessional collaboration. She also has extensive public speaking skills.
Kirsten Armit has several years’ experience in project and programme management of national and international leadership development programmes in the UK and Australia. Her recent experience includes managing the establishment of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management, managing the Emerging Clinical Leaders Program for Queensland Health, Australia and as Senior Project Manager for the Enhancing Engagement in Medical Leadership project, led by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. Kirsten has published a number of articles in national and international journals and other publications, as well as e-learning materials relating to medical leadership and management.
Kirsten completed the Australian College of Health Service Executives Management Development Programme in 2004 and holds a Bachelor of Health Science (Health Services Management), Certificate IV in Business (Frontline Management), Prince II Practitioner qualification and Foundation IV in Coaching Skills. Kirsten is a member of the Australasian College of Health Service Managers, Institute for Healthcare Management, fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and associate of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.
Dr Veronica Wilkie is a General Practitioner (GP) in a training practice in Droitwich, Worcestershire, and a Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow at the Institute of Clinical Leadership at Warwick University Medical School. She has a master’s degree in Evidence-based Medicine and was a GP trainer, course organiser and postgraduate tutor, before starting her current post at Warwick University. She is currently working with the NHS Institute on evaluating the implementation of the Medical Leadership Competency Framework, and she teaches and facilitates courses on medical leadership and evidence-based practice (EBP). She is the Curriculum Guardian for the EBP statement for the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) curriculum. (March 2008).
