Medication for Mental Health Problems in Primary Care - Part 2 course for Practice Nurses
This is Part 2 of two sessions which cover the medications prescribed for most mental health conditions seen in primary care.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- List which medications are prescribed for:
- dementia
- severe mental illness
- List of the side-effects of the various medications
- Complete a side-effect rating scale
Mental health problems are evident in 1 in 3 or 4 patients seen in primary care. Many secondary care services for mental health are working towards earlier discharge, making primary care an important place for delivering mental healthcare.
Sheila has 20 years of experience in primary care where her clinical work included caring for patients with physical and mental health problems.
Sheila is keen to improve the care of people with mental health problems in primary care. She has carried out research to show the benefits of practice nurses monitoring the physical health in people with serious mental illness (SMI), and how using a psychological intervention in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can promote self-management.
Sheila writes educational articles for practice nursing journals and has co-authored a book about mental illness in primary care. She has created training for practice nurses in various areas of mental health.
