This session will explore ethical and equity issues relating to the planning of services, such as equality and diversity, the involvement of patients and the public, the rationing of services and the equitable use of resources. This session supports the development of leadership in clinical settings.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify the ethical and equity issues associated with planning, managing and leading services
  • Examine how systematic consideration of ethical issues can be built into normal planning and management processes
  • Critique your own service in terms of the extent to which ethical considerations have been taken into account in service planning and delivery
  • Identify the dilemmas for all health professionals in relation to rationing decisions
  • Demonstrate your contribution to leadership in the clinical setting by recommending ways of widening patient and public participation in decisions

Bob has developed his interest in clinical leadership through his experiences training and working as a paediatrician and medical educationalist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and in other roles across London. He has developed a number of work-based leadership development initiatives, including ‘Paired Learning’, and was involved in supporting the NHS Institute’s Enhancing Engagement in Medical Leadership project team in their work around the Medical Leadership Competency Framework.
