Darwin

Living and working in Darwin, NT

Sandy beaches that stretch for miles, and night markets that dazzle, parklands and reserves that are a stone’s throw away, where creatures of the wild lurk and the bustle of a metropolitan city that is both a gateway to Asia, and a land entrenched in its own cultural heritage – Darwin is a tourist’s delight and a Territorian’s pride.

Situated on the northernmost coast of Australia, Darwin faces the Timor Sea.  Here it is flanked by Cullen Bay to the west and Frances Bay to the east. It may be the largest city of NT, but for a sparsely populated state with few residents, it caters to only a small population.

Darwin acts as a doorway to the Kakadu National Park, Arnhem Land, and northerly islands such as Groote Eylandt and the Tiwi Islands. It supports these remote settlements, providing education, entertainment, medical and healthcare services. It also acts as a hub for tours to Kakadu National Park, Litchfield National Park and Katherine Gorge.

Darwin is well-connected. The Stuart Highway begins in Darwin and the city has a robust bus network for local and inter-city conveyance. The city affords further connectivity through the Darwin International Airport and Alice Springs – Darwin railway line.

Healthcare and Medical Jobs in Darwin, NT

Mining and Tourism are the two large sectors with significant economic impact. The energy production is mostly offshore with oil and natural gas from the Timor Sea, placing a high demand on the Darwin Port. Health and Social Assistance is the second largest employer, following Public Administration and Safety, and generates 7,040 jobs.

Education is overseen by the Department of Education and Training and there is a special focus on indigenous students, given the proportionally large indigenous population here. Darwin’s largest university, the Charles Darwin University, is also an Institute of TAFE.

The Northern Territory Primary Health Network (PHN) supports the professions in the region. The Royal Darwin Hospital, located in Tiwi, is the city’s major teaching and referral hospital. The Darwin Private Hospital is a noteworthy facility. Many private practices and specialists, as well as Aboriginal community controlled health services, are also available here. Danila Dilba Health Service is an Aboriginal community controlled health service that provides primary health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the greater Darwin region.

The median housing price is $505,000 and the median weekly rent is $500, making housing slightly more expensive than the rest of NT. However, you may yet consider it knowing home could be a city that is a world of its own!
